Fashion photography is no different than any other style of photography. What defines a fashion photographer is his style and how he chooses to shoot his subjects.
Some fashion photographers prefer more of a natural lighting approach VS the studio lighting and working with expensive strobes, beauty dishes, softboxes and other gadgets.
I personally prefer a well-balanced usage of a studio and natural lighting.
But some of the most important things for me as a fashion photographer is;
If you know your lighting, you can shoot almost anything, anywhere at any time.
Beautiful photographs must have beautiful shadows, without shadows your images can look flat and undesirable.
Educate yourself about the latest fashion, best fashion designers, haute couture, colors, trends, brands, etc…
Sketch your ideas or find similar images that you wish to create ahead of time.
Discuss your ideas with your team such as your models, Makeup artists, Hairstylists, Fashion stylists, etc…to ensure a great execution.
By keeping your shoot light and fun, you’ll get the best photos of your subject.
Think out loud, tell the models what you are thinking. Suggest ideas, help them feel a certain way or to strike a certain pose. They can’t read your mind.
The best images are those that require little retouching. Using it to enhance your images and not to correct the bad lighting or composition.
Working with professional fashion models can only ensure much better images.
Most fashion photographs are simple, yet beautiful in lighting and composition.
These are just a few quick tips that come to mind, but for those photographers that wish to learn more about fashion photography or how to become one.
